· Students who are self-directed learners.

· Students who desire a non-traditional approach to learning.

diploma requirements while working.

Our PURPOSE is to be the prototype for the 21st Century.

Our MISSION is to facilitate the creation and navigation of every individual’s pathway to success.

Our APPROACH is to create individualized, customized academic and career plans that provide meaningful and engaging educational experiences for all learners.

Admissions Process

Students who will benefit from a non-traditional system of education are those most likely to succeed.  Students not currently enrolled in Little River School District must request to attend AcademyYOU by submitting an application to USD 444 AcademyYOU Director.  Admission will be granted based on order of application received for those meeting the AcademyYOU requirements.  No student will be admitted to this program without agreement of the student, the parent/guardian and AcademyYOU.  Once a student has attended AcademyYOU, he or she will be readmitted for the next consecutive year unless extenuating circumstances occur. Individuals not considered students of the USD 444 school district may be charged a fee for courses taken. Students enrolled in a USD 444 school full-time seeking to take additional coursework will be charged a per semester class fee. Any Kansas student who enrolls after September 20 will be required to pay the appropriate per class fee.

Academics

Academic Responsibility

Successful students are able to pass the core classes (language arts, science, math, social studies) and fulfill all project requirements. The curriculum is designed so that the knowledge gained will be used in the successive years. Students will have access to learning facilitators.  Students in this performance-based environment are expected to demonstrate mastery before moving to the next level. Students are responsible for their own learning and are expected to fully participate in the designing of their learning plan. Students must demonstrate progress by earning no fewer than 3 credits per semester. Students failing to do so may be required to find alternative school placement.

Individual Learning Plans

Along with AcademyYOU staff, students will develop individual learning plans that will guide the development of their approaches to learning. These plans will be based upon student identified interests, strengths, and skills. Students will collaborate with parents or guardians and members of the AcademyYOU staff to determine their learning pathways.

Attendance

Required attendance onsite and/or virtually is mandatory no fewer than 1 day for 6 hours prior to September 20 and on September 20 for 6 hours. Failure to attend on required days will result in assessment of fees for each class taken.

Other required attendance dates will be announced to accommodate special seminars; meetings with school personnel, project presentations, and for required state testing.

Daily attendance is required but allows for flexibility of scheduling and instructional delivery and support. Students are required to maintain an accurate daily log of time spent working toward fulfilling the goals of their learning plan. Students are expected to make consistent progress toward semester goals.   Students may arrange meetings with their learning facilitators. These facilitators will be available during the school week at various scheduled times.

Student Contact Information

The school must have on file current student contact information to include the parent or guardian’s mailing address, e-mail address, and telephone numbers for home and work. In addition, students must maintain a current email address. Parents or guardians and students are responsible for providing the school with any changes to email addresses or other contact information.

Student Conduct

Use of tobacco in any form and use or possession of any controlled substance, alcohol or intoxicant of any kind are prohibited in any school building owned or leased by Haysville USD 444.

Academic dishonesty is not acceptable. Claiming the work of others as the student’s own and plagiarism are both prohibited practices. Materials taken from electronic sources are covered by this policy.

When on campus or when representing AcademyYOU in the public arena, students’ general appearance should be neat and clean with clothing appropriate to the situation.

Computer Acceptable Use Policy

Students shall have no expectation of privacy when using district e-mail or computer systems. Students must use appropriate language in all messages. Students are expected to use the system following guidelines approved by teachers or the administrators.

Any e-mail or computer application or information in district computers or computer systems is subject to monitoring by the staff and/or administration. The school retains the right to duplicate any information created by students in a computer system or on any individual computer. Students who violate these rules, or any other classroom rules relating to computer use are subject to disciplinary action up to and including expulsion from school.

Students should be aware that they are expected at all times to behave responsibly and respectfully in their use of computer technology. Inappropriate use of these technologies will result in cancellation of computer access or other disciplinary action by school officials. Access to the use of computer technology is essential to participation in the AcademyYOU program of study. Therefore, this policy should be taken seriously and followed without exception.

Searches of Students and Possessions

A search of any student or his/her possessions may occur at any time upon reasonable suspicion that such search may result in the finding of firearms, explosives, liquor, flammable materials, weapons, narcotics, or other matter prohibited by law or school policy from being on school property. Such searches may be made without prior notice to the student and only be conducted by the principal or designated representative. An attempt shall be made to notify the parent or guardian of any student less than 18 years of age, so he/she may be afforded the opportunity to be present during such a search. Any evidence recovered by the principal and/or designated representative will be turned over to the appropriate law enforcement authorities. Documentation of such search and/or seizure will be submitted to the Superintendent and placed in the student’s file. Searches are not done randomly and without substance of concern. It is only when the well being of the students and/or staff are compromised that a search may take place.
